Angels' Abreu takes home AL weekly honors

08/16/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Bobby Abreu was named Player of the Week for the American League for the period ending August 15.

Abreu paced the AL with a .524 average, .615 on-base percentage and tied for first with 11 hits. He hit safely in all six of the Angels' games during the week and is riding an eight-game hitting streak overall.

Over the course of a three-game sweep of the Royals, Abreu batted 7-for-12 with two home runs, two doubles and five RBI while connecting for a walk-off home run in the 10th inning of a 2-1 win. LA went 4-2 during the week.

This marks the first career AL weekly award for Abreu, who previously won NL honors three times during his eight-plus seasons in Philadelphia.

Others considered for the weekly honor were Minnesota's Joe Mauer, Nelson Cruz of the Rangers, Detroit's Ryan Raburn, Rays rookie right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester, and Felix Hernandez and David Aardsma of the Mariners.
